Abstract

Keywords: reading comprehension, questioning strategy Reading is a process of perceiving a written text in order to understand its contents. Reading is very important to people especially for students. One interesting method that can make the students feel enjoy in reading class is questioning strategy. Questioning strategy is an important technique and it is one of the most popular modes of teaching for the act of asking questions has the potential to greatly facilitate the learning process. Furthermore, by using this method, the students were very active when teaching and learning process was done. The statement of the research problem can be stated as follow “How can reading comprehension ability of eighth grade at MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari Tulungagung in academic year 2013/2014 be improved by using questioning strategy? The objective of this study as follow “to know how can the reading comprehension ability of eighth grade at MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari Tulungagung in academic year 2013/2014 be improved by using questioning strategy. The research design used was Classroom Action Research (CAR) by Kemmis and Taggart. The participants were the students of eighth grade at MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari Tulungagung. The researcher collaborated with the English teacher to apply the questioning strategy to teach reading to the students of VIII-A MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari. The classroom action research was conducted for 1 month in the second semester of the academic year 2013/2014 that was in May up to June 2014. There were 14 students as the subjects of study. The class consists of 8 males and 6 females. From all of the process in cycle 1 from meeting 1 until meeting 3, it can be concluded that there were 5 students or 39% of the total students who could get the score ≥ 70. It did not yet meet with the predetermined criteria for success that was 75%. So the researcher continued to the second cycle. From cycle II from meeting 1 until meeting 3, there were 13 students or 96% of the total students who could get the score ≥ 70. The improvement of the students’ score from cycle I to cycle II was 62%. Some weaknesses found in the first cycle, which had been revised, could improve the students’ ability in reading comprehension in the meetings in cycle 2. Based on the result, the students’ achievement after using questioning strategy was improved. By observing the students’ process in learning reading ix from cycle 1 until cycle 2 there are some developments in the teaching and learning process. Some suggestions that can be given to improve the quality of teaching and learning process related to the students’ reading ability are; the teacher must always support and give students many motivations, teachers can consider of using questioning strategy to encourage students to be active, participated, competitive, and brave. It gives more joyful to have new impressions or experiences. Finally, it can be concluded that questioning strategy is effective media in teaching English readingin junior high school, especially for the second grade students of MTs Sultan AgungJabalsari Tulungagung.
