Abstract

In Indonesia, English is not widely used in everyday communication, resulting in difficulties in effective English communication and lagging behind in international scientific publications and English proficiency. This research highlights the importance of English language learning in Indonesia by drawing inspiration from Kato Lomb, a polyglot who learned languages as an adult. By adopting Kato Lomb's strategies, which emphasize motivation, perseverance, and determination as key factors for success, it is hoped that English language learning in Indonesia can become more effective and enjoyable. This qualitative study aims to understand Kato Lomb's strategies for second language acquisition and learning, as well as the factors influencing her success in language mastery. The research design involves library research, analyzing primary data from Lomb's book, 'Polyglot: How I Learn Language,' and secondary data from interviewer on YouTube video and supporting papers by other researchers. Based on the data and analysis, it is evident that individuals have the potential to become multilingual, including acquiring proficiency in English, as demonstrated by Kato Lomb and her language learning strategies. Success in multilingualism can be attributed to two processes: learning and acquiring, both of which require various mastery strategies. Kato Lomb's approach, based on the Oxford theory, incorporates six strategies (Affective, Social, Compensation, Memory, Cognitive, and Metacognitive), each contributing to the improvement of language learning. Furthermore, several factors influence language learners' success in acquiring a new language. Internal factors encompass Language Transfer, Cognitive Account of Second Language Acquisition, Linguistic Universals, and Second Language Acquisition. External factors include Social Factors, Input and Interaction, as well as Individual Differences in Second Language Acquisition, such as aptitude and motivation. Learning strategies, such as memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies, also play a crucial role in language acquisition
