Keywords: Reading comprehension, Class activities, Sq3r Reading is a way of learning for students to enrich their abilities and knowledge because reading is a process of obtaining meaning from text. By reading, readers can obtain information and knowledge. Reading cannot be separated from understanding. Understanding is a process that involves thinking, teaching, past experience, and knowledge. In the process of understanding text students build on their previous knowledge then they try to engage with the words they have identified with the comprehension strategies they have. In reading activities, students usually face several problems such as not being able to find information in the text. The problems come from the students themselves, which stem from their English language skills. Most students do not understand the meaning (in Indonesian) of the English texts they read and they are not familiar with every word contained in stories written in English. The statement of the problem from the research is: "How can the reading comprehension of tenth grade students’ at SMAN 1 Durenan be improved by using the developed SQ3R technique?". And the purpose of the research is to improve the reading comprehension of tenth grade students’ of SMAN 1 Durenan using the SQ3R technique developed by researchers in English lessons. This research was conducted on students in tenth class at SMAN 1 Durenan. The object of this research was 36 students in class X MIPA 2, including 10 males students and 26 females students. The technique used is SQ3R, students can: (1) identify the main idea; (2) find detailed information; and (3) find the purpose of a story they read. Improvement in students' reading comprehension can also be shown by scores. This research method is Classroom Action Research (PTK). In this research, researchers carried out two cycles. Which consists of planning, implementing actions, observing, reflecting, and revising plans, and ends with a cycle test. To collect data, researchers used tests, observations, interviews, questionnaires and documentation. The finding of this research is that the first score increased after students were taught using listening to reading. Secondly, the SQ3R technique has a significant impact on the reading comprehension of tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Durenan. The average result of the preliminary test was 58.1 in cycle 1 test, increasing to 66.2 and increasing to 79.5 in cycle 2 test. Apart from that, classroom conditions also improved when researchers implemented the SQ3R method, as follows: (1) students were more active when they wanted to ask and answer questions; (2) students enjoy teaching and learning and they pay attention to the teaching and learning process; (3) students are more enthusiastic in reading in class. This shows that the application of the SQ3R technique can improve the reading comprehension of tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Durenan. This research shows an improvement in students' reading comprehension and classroom situations. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers apply certain effective techniques and create pleasant situations in the teaching and learning process so that students can learn effectively and be actively involved in class. Teachers must also help students to understand the text. Teachers can use learning techniques such as Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review (SQ3R) because this method can help students be effective in the process of understanding reading because this technique makes students enjoy learning. By using the SQ3R method, the learning process can run effectively and students do not feel bored. Automatically the teaching and learning process runs well and the purpose can be achieved.
