Abstract

English is a very important subject for students because it is the language that regulates the era of communication for communicating and sharing information in society. Possessing good vocabulary mastery helps students improve their communication skill. It means owning much vocabulary will enable students to have better communication but many students are still having difficulties in learning vocabulary. It is because most of English vocabulary are different in term of written and spoken. To face this facts, students have their way to learn and add their new English words. To overcome this problem, there are some media, techniques, or habits that can improve students’ vocabulary one of which is by listening to English songs on Spotify. Spotify has grown to become one among the most well-known streaming platforms. The process of repeated listening activity would be a habit. The vocabulary is obtained through the lyrics of English songs frequently listened to by the students. Therefore, based on the above, the researcher conducted a research to find out if there was significant correlation between habit in listening to English songs on Spotify and vocabulary number of tenth grade students at Senior High School 2 Trenggalek. The study is based on a quantitative method with a correlation design to know the correlation between habit listening to English songs on Spotify and students vocabulary number. The samples in this research were 36 students obtained through simple random sampling technique. In data collection, the researcher used questionnaire to assess habit in listening to English songs on Spotify and used test of vocabulary. The researcher used coefficient correlation of spearman’s rank through SPSS 25.0 program. The result showed that the correlation coefficient was 0.550 at significant level of 0.001. the correlation coefficient (0.550) was within the interval 0.40-0.60 and from interpretation of correlation research, it was categorized as moderated correlation. Based on the significant level 0.001 (0.001 < 0.05), it could be concluded that the H0 was rejected and the Ha was accepted. The result of this research showed that there was a significant correlation between habit in listening to songs on Spotify and students’ vocabulary number at SMAN 2 Trenggalek.
