ABSTRACT Mashudi, Imam. 2024. Using Scaffolding Strategy to Improve the Writing Ability of the 10th Graders of SMAN 1 Karangan. Thesis, Post Graduate Program of English Education, State Islamic Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah University. Advisors: (1) Dr. Ida Isnawati, M.Pd., (2). Dr. Nursamsu, M.Pd. Keywords: writing, writing ability, scaffolding strategy This study is addressed to overcome the problem faced by the X grade students at SMAN 1 Karangan. In the preliminary study that was conducted in class X-J of SMAN I Karangan. It was found that 74.0% of the students had low writing scores because they rarely practiced writing in class. One of the factors that led them to this situation is that writing was very boring and they could not put any ideas to write. They were confused about how they would put their ideas into words and develop them further into paragraph. In response to the problem, the researcher proposed using the Scaffolding strategy to improve students’ ability in writing a text while also creating new situation in learning in the classroom. This strategy starts with classroom presentation about material by the teacher, and then followed by five stages of writing namely prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. In this stages there are some treatments such as; guiding questions from teacher, using graphic organizer, and discussing the writing process together with teacher. The study used Classroom Action Research and was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of two meetings. The subjects were 27 students in X-J class of SMAN 1 Karangan. It was proven by the improvement of the students’ writing scores from the preliminary test to the final writing test. At the end of the second cycle, 85.18% students’ get 75 at minimum and 84.03% of them participated actively in the class. In conclusion, the implementation of the Scaffolding strategy improved the writing ability of X-J grade students in SMAN 1 Karangan. The new concept of scaffolding strategy can bring a new atmosphere and motivate the students in writing a good paragraph. Therefore, teachers in general should think of using the strategy in teaching writing as it can be used to improve the students’ writing ability. Besides, the strategy could help the students to be more active in the teaching and learning process. Future researchers who are interested in conducting a similar study are recommended to modify the Scaffolding strategy and implement the strategy to the different levels of the learners and in teaching different skills.
