Abstract

Keywords: Speech as Discourse, Discourse Practice, Critical Discourse Analyze, Discourse and Change of Education System, Speech as Language. This study aims to analyze the use of language in Education Minister Ong Ye Kung's speech when delivering responses at the Committee of Supply debate in the 2019 fiscal year. This study uses the conceptual framework of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to obtain more in-depth findings. The research question of this study is what is found in The Speech of MOE FY 2019 Committee of Supply Debate Response by Minister for Education Ong Ye Kung. In the discourse analysis, English is the main language used by Minister Ong in answering the questions of the MPs. There are certain patterns and strategies of language use such as rhetorical techniques (repetition and metaphor) and speech acts (advertisement/promotion of the country's education policy). The analysis shows the government's attempt to strengthen their arguments on current education issues through the use of appropriate language and effective speaking styles. This study provides an overview of how language can influence people's views on state education policies. Future researchers can conduct further studies with other research objects in certain socio-political contexts so that they can contribute to the development of science in the future. The study can try to conduct a more in-depth discourse analysis by using different CDA methods and methods to obtain more accurate and complete research results.
