ABSTRACT Aulia Rumitasari, Rizka Fitri . 126203201012. 2024. Factors Contributing To Student’s Lack Of SelfConfidence In Speaking English Of The 8th Grade At MTsN 3 Tulungagung. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. Advisor: Dr. Nany Soengkono Madayani, S.S., M.Pd. Keyword: Speaking skill, self-confidence, lack of self-confidence. In this study, the researcher focused on the factors contributing students' lack of self-confidence in English speaking habit at MTsN 3 Tulungagung. The researcher very curious about the causal factors why students are often silent during English learning activities which make them lack of self confidence in speaking. The formulation of the problem in this study are: 1) What are the factors that contribute to the students' lack of self-confidence in speaking English? 2) What are the solutions to minimize students’ lack of self-confidence in speaking English? The objectives of this research are 1) To find out the factors that contributes to the students lack of self-confidence in speaking English 2) To find out the solutions to minimize students’lack of self-confidence in speaking English. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The data obtained from observation and interview. Observation were used to obtain data to answer the problem formulation about factors that contribute students' lack of self-confidence in speaking English, while interview were used to obtain more in-depth data. The results showed that there are two factors that contribute students lack of self confidence in speaking English, namely internal factors and external factors. The internal factors that contribute students’ lack of self-confidence in speaking English : The first is arise from students’ self-concept including afraid of making mistake, intimidated by other's ability, lack of grammar knowledge, lack of pronunciation and lack of vocabulary. The second is arise from students’ self-esteem including afraid being laughed at by others. The third is arise from students’ physical condition including their insecurity. The forth is students’ life experience including their negative experience in the past. The external factors that contribute students’ lack of self-confidence in speaking English : The first one is arise from students’ education including teachers’ attitude in teaching. The second is arise from student environment including surrounding community, school and family.
