Abstract
Susiati, Trihanik. Student Register Number. 126203211075. 2025. Students' Difficulties in Involving Audience in Public Speaking on the English Education Department at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Muh. Basuni, M.Pd. Keywords: Public Speaking, Involve an Audience, Students’ Difficulties Public speaking is a crucial skill for English Language Education students, particularly the ability to engage an audience when delivering a speech or presentation. However, many students, particularly English Language Education students at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, experience difficulties engaging their audience. These difficulties include a lack of self-confidence, fear of being judged negatively, limited speaking skills, and an inability to understand audience needs and responses. This suggests that students' difficulties in English, particularly public speaking, are a daunting prospect. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the causes of students' fear and even difficulty speaking English. By identifying the causes, it is hoped that solutions can be found to help students overcome these obstacles and improve their speaking skills actively. This study aims to identify students' difficulties during public speaking in the classroom, as well as techniques and strategies for engaging audiences. This study used descriptive qualitative research, and the data were collected through open-ended questionnaires. The participants were 29 students in the sixth and eighth semesters of the English Education Department at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The results revealed two main categories of difficulties: (1) a. Psychological factors such as anxiety, lack of confidence, and fear of making mistakes; and b. Linguistic factors such as limited vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency; and (2) technical challenges in engaging the audience, such as lack of interaction, inappropriate delivery techniques, and inability to maintain the audience's attention. The findings also showed that students used various strategies such as intonation variation, visual media, humor, and interactive questions to engage the audience. These strategies helped reduce anxiety and improve public speaking performance. In conclusion, students' difficulties in engaging the audience in public speaking were caused by linguistic and psychological factors, namely low self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, and fear of being judged, which were influenced by social pressure. Despite these obstacles, students demonstrated awareness and initiative by implementing various audience engagement strategies, highlighting the need for teaching approaches that address both language skills and affective factors.
