Abstract

Reading and writing are two important skills in English Language Learning (ELL). Reading comprehension is the ability to understand the written text that involves connecting ideas, constructing meaning, and relating the person’s existing knowledge. The ability to comprehend reading directly can affect the ability to express their thoughts and ideas in writing. Writing requires vocabulary, sentence structure, and understanding of ideas gained from reading. In this research, the researcher choose narrative text besides as the learning subject because this text consists of structured elements that help students develop both reading comprehension and writing skills effectively. This study addresses the research problem: Is there a significant correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability in narrative texts among ninth-grade students at MTsN 1 Tulungagung? Therefore, the objective of the research is to determine whether there is a significant correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability in narrative texts of ninth grade students' at MTsN 1 Tulungagung. This research used quantitative method with correlational research design. The population of this research was the ninth grade students of MTsN 1 Tulungagung. The researcher selected 31 students from class 9I as a sample by using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using two instruments: a multiple choice test and writing ability test. The reading comprehension test consisted of 30 multiple-choice questions, while the writing test required students to retell a fairy tale story they have watched into a narrative text form. The data of this research was in the form of students’ scores of the tests. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment Correlation Formula in SPSS 26.0. The results showed that the Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.779 with a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000. Since the significance value is smaller than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05), it means that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability in narrative text of ninth grade students at MTsN 1 Tulungagung. Keywords:Reading Comprehension, Writing Ability, Narrative Text.
