Abstract

The thesis entitled “An Analysis of Figurative language used in Movie Script “The Garfield Movie”” was written by Novita Adiningsih, NIM 1860203221061, English Education Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, supervised by Nany Soengkono Madayani, S. S, M. Pd. Keywords: Figurative language, Movie Script, The Garfield Movie Movies commonly use figurative language to share the author ideas. Figurative language is frequently employed in movie script to capture the viewer’s attention and help the writer convey ideas in a more engaging way. Figurative language is also used in movie script to make the conversation of each character more vivid and imaginative. Figurative language is choosen as the focus of this study because it is an appealing aspect of language that carries deeper meaning within the dialogue in the movie script The research problems of this research are: 1) what types of figurative language are used in movie script “The Garfield Movie”? and 2) what are the message of fgurative language found in movie script “The Garfield Movie”?. While the objectives of this research are: 1) to identify the types f figurative language used in movie script “The Garfield Movie” and 2) to know the message of figurative language in movie script “The Garfield Movie”. This reserch employs a library research with qulitative approach , with the data gadhered from the movie script “The Garfield Movie” as the data source. The utterance of each characters in the movie are analyzed to identify the types of figurative language used. Subsequently, each identified figurative expression is examined to determine whether it can build and convey messages, as well as to reveal the message embedded within it. Triangulation by theory employed to ensure the result of the findings. Based on the analysis, the result shows there are 33 utterances that contain figurative language including 5 similes, 8 metaphor, 10 hyperboles, 1 personification, 1 apostrophe, 4 understatements, and 4 verbal irony. In the terms of message conveyed in the figurative language, there are 3 figurative languages that can build message which divided into 2 moral messages and 1 social message.
