Keywords: effectiveness, writing descriptive text, Place Based Education, Writing descriptive text often becomes a problem for the students. Usually the students meet difficulties in term of gaining ideas from the object description, organizing idea into the paragraphs, dictions where the students are less in vocabulary collection, spelling, and so on. Based on todays, curriculum 13 in teaching writing descriptive text, teacher must support students center in term of understanding the object through experiential and meaningful strategy. The use of Place Based Education strategy helps the writing process in term of understanding the real object by moving on students’ senses. The students can gain the idea through their experiences and put it into paragraphs of descriptive text. Teaching descriptive text by using PBE strategy makes the students more active to go around to describe the object, while the teacher as controler. Hence, this research aims at knowing the effectiveness of using Place Based Education strategy toward the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at SMP Negeri 1 Kalidawir on academic year 2017/2018. The formulation of the research problem is: “Is there any significant difference toward students’ writing descriptive text achievement before and after being taught by using Place Based Education strategy to seven grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kalidawir?”. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the use of Place Based Education strategy is effective to use in teaching writing of descriptive text or not. This research used pre-experimental design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was seven grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kalidawir on academic year 2017/2018. The sample of this research was seven A class which consisted of 32 students chosen by purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, the researcher used research instrument in form of test. To analyze the collected data, the researcher used SPSS 16.0 version software. The finding of this research showed that there is a significant difference between the result of pre-test and post-test. The mean of post-test was 75.25 and it was higher than the mean of pre-test (64.56), the different mean is 10.688. It means that there was increasing score on the students’ achievement. From statistical calculation showed that the significant value is 0.000 which was smaller than the significant level (0.050). It means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In addition, using Place Based Education in writing descriptive text mostly gives significant influence in content. Beside content, it gives significant influence in aspects of vocabulary and organizing the idea. As the result, it could be concluded that using Place Based Education strategy was effective to increase students’ writing achievement in descriptive text for seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kalidawir. Finally, it is suggested that Place Based Education strategy can be used as alternative strategy for English teacher in teaching and learning activity on writing descriptive text.
