Keywords: effectiveness, Running Dictation strategy, listening ability The government of Indonesia has decided that English is one of the compulsory subjects especially in Junior High School. Listening is one of English skills learnt by the students besides three other skill; reading, speaking, and writing. Listening is a medium for learners to get information and to understand the language. In the learning process the use of strategy an important in English learning because it can be used to attract the students’ attention and improve the students’ ability in learning English especially in listening. In this research, the reseacher try to find out the effectiveness of Running Dictation strategy toward eighth grade students’ listening ability at MTs Negeri 4 Tulungagung in the academic year 2017/2018. By using Running Dictation, the students are expected able to comforted and has fun activities. The formulation of the research problem were :1) how is the listening ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 4 Tulungagung in the academic year 2017/2018 taught without using Running Dictation?, 2) How is the listening ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 4 Tulungagung in the academic year 2017/2018 taught by using Running Dictation?,3) Is there any significant different ability in listening of the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 4 Tulungagung in the academic year 2017/2018 between the students’ taught without using Running Dictation and those taught by Running Dictation?. The research design in this research was quasi-experimental design with nonrandomized control group, pretest-posttest. The population of this research were all of the students of eighth grade in MTs Negeri 4 Tulungagung in the academic year 2017/2018 which consisted of nine clasess. Total of populatian was 343 students. The samples were the students of VIII-D class consisted of 39 students as experimental group and VIII-E class consisted of 40 students as control group.This research instrument was test and the data analysis was using T-test. The result showed that the students’ mean score of the experimental group was higher than the mean score of the control group. In order to know the difference between the two means was significant or not, using T-test at SPSS 16,0 was applied. The result of tcount was 4.303, the critical value for 77 degree freedom (df) at 5% of significant level was 0,000. So there is significant different because tcount > 0,000. It means that Ha which states there is significant different score in listening ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 4 Tulungagung in the academic year 2017/2018 between the students’ taught without using Running Dictation and those taught by Running Dictation is accepted. Whereas, Ho which states there is no significant different score in listening ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 4 Tulungagung in the academic year 2017/2018 between the students’ taught without using Running Dictation and those taught by using Running Dictation is rejected. The finding proved that Running Dictation strategy was effective used in listening class to improve students’ listening ability of the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri 4 Tulungagung in the academic year 2017/2018.
