Abstract

ABSTRACT Lutifani, Gea Ulfi. Student Registered Number. 1723143059. 2018 The Effectiveness of Story Completion toward Students’ Speaking Skill at MTsN 2 Kota Blitar. Thesis. English Educational Depertment. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, Ss. M.Pd. Keywords : Effectiveness, The students’ speaking skill, Story Completion. There are many kinds of techniques of teaching speaking that can be used. One of them used in teaching speaking is story completion. With this technique, student didnot feel bored and they interested in the classroom and also can build effective in teaching learning. In this technique the students are perform in front of class one by one. Students who get the some topic and picture and they will do the same topic and picture who they get. After that, they have to perform in front of their friends. The formulations of the research problem were : 1) How is students’ speaking skill before they are taught by using story completion in recount text? The objective of this study were to : 1) know students’ speaking skill before they are taught by using story completion in recount text, 2) know students’ speaking skill after they are taught by using story completion technique in recount text, 3) know whether there is any significant differences between students’ speaking skill before they are taught and after they are taught by using story completion tecnique in recount text. Research method : 1) the research design is pre-experimental design using quantitative approach. 2) The population of this study was students VII D class of MTsN 2 Kota Blitar. 3) The sample was VII E class consist of 45 students. 4) The research instruments was test (pre-test and post-test). 5) The data analysis of research is T-Test. The reserach finding in this research is the mean score of speaking before being taught by using story completion is enough because the mean score of 45 students is 56.98. After getting treatment, the mean score of speaking skill is 80.67 based on the criteria of the students’ score is good score it was improved, with the t-test analysis that used by researcher, the result of tcount is by comparing the ttable that she has got is spss 16.0, Tcount 23.689 and value of ttable on the score table t0,05 1.684. its mean that tcount is much bigger than ttable (tcount>ttable) = (23.689>1.684) Based on the result above, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that states there is significant difference of students’ speaking skill by using story completion is accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) that states there is no significant difference of students speaking skill by using story completion is rejected. It was concluded that story completion technique is effective to improve the students’ speaking skill, especially at the seventh grade of MTsN 2 Kota Blitar.
