In these teaching media with picture books, the students do the task individually. They more became careful with their reading especially in the narrative text, also they were good in reading of the text. As a result, the use picture books motivated the students‟ creativity and active in the process of learning. The students‟ reading ability by using picture books gave positive effects towards students‟ reading ability. The formulations of the research problems were: 1). Is there any significant difference of the students‟ reading ability in narrative text between those who are taught by using picture books and those who are taught without using picture book? This study used Quasi-experimental design type pretest, treatment, and posttest with quantitative approach. The population of this study was the second grade students of Junior High School 3 Kedungwaru consisting of consisting 311 students. Due to the big number of students, the researcher used purposive sampling technique to take part of students as sample and the researcher chose E and F class of second grade student because these classes have average ability in English that other classes. E class was as the experimental group (with treatment) and F class was as the control group (without treatment). A test was an instrument used in this study to collect the data that will be analyzed by using T-test. The result showed that the students‟ mean value without using picture books was 5.75 while the students‟ mean value taught by using picture books was 8.81. The T-count was 2.300, whereas T-table with significant level 5% was 2.089. So, T-count was greater than T-table. It means that Ho which states that there is significant different score in students‟ reading ability in narrative text without using picture books and using picture books is accepted. This means that teaching reading by using picture books was more effective to improve the students‟ ability in reading ability narrative text than without teaching reading without picture books. In other words, picture books can be used as an alternative media to teach reading in narrative text to the students at SMP level because it can create a comfortable condition that make the students enjoy in reading text
