Abstract
ABSTRACT Uswatus, Anaa. Students Registered Number. 3213103006. 2014. “Improving Students' Vocabulary Mastery Using Realia at the Seventh Grade E MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang in Academic Year 2013/2014”. Thesis. English Education Department. The Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher’s Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Faizatul Istiqomah, M.Ed. Key word: Vocabulary, Realia Vocabulary mastery is very important in learning English. Having many vocabularies will help the students in learning the four basic skills of English. Vocabulary is core component of language proficiency and provides much of basis for how well learners speak, listen, read and write. Practically, it insists the teacher takes special priority in teaching it. To achieve the objective of teaching vocabulary, the teacher needs to provide a technique that can motivate and help students become independent learners without ignoring the essential purposes of studying English. The researcher uses realia as media during teaching learning process to make the students easily understand the meaning of new words. The formulation of the research problem is: “How can media realia improve the students’ vocabulary mastery atthe seventh grade E students MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang?”. The purpose of this study is to describe how media realia can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery in learning English process at the VII EMTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang. This study is classroom action research. It adapted Kemmis and Mc. Taggart’s model in Suharsimi Arikunto. The study consists of two cycles, each of which consisted of four stages namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this study was the seventh grade E students of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang. During the research, the researcher acted as the teacher’s implementation of realia. She made reflection about what happened in cycle 1. After that, she is re-planning the activities that were going to do in cycle II. The instruments used in this study were the vocabulary test, observation sheet, and field note. The research findings are taken from cycle I and cycle II. The result of test I showed that 9 students got score less than 75 or 31.03% was unsuccessful and 20 students got score more than 75 or 68.9% was unsuccessful. The result of test II showed that 3 students got score less than 75 or 10.34% was unsuccessful and 26 students score more than 75 or 89.65% successful. It means that in cycle II the students’ score test got better and the research is success. Based on finding of the researcher, it can be concluded that realia can improve the seventh grade E students’ vocabulary mastery. Some suggestions are proposed for the English teacher. First, it is suggested for English to use realia tohelp the students improving their vocabulary mastery. Second, it is better for the teacher to give any short test dealing with materials that are just taught to know whether or not the teaching learning process successful. For the other researcher, this study hopefully can be used as the contribution to do further research, especially dealing with the vocabulary mastery and importance of using realia.
