Abstract

ABSTRACT Sobba, Much. Luthfi Darul. 3213103022. Students’ Strategies in Improving Their Speaking Proficiency at Islamic Boarding School of Mamba’us Sholihin 2 Blitar. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor : Dr. Susanto, M.Pd. Keywords : Learning Strategy, Speaking Proficiency In speaking, students need preparations, especially students in Islamic Boarding School in the future they have to obligation use English language in everywhere these problem students must be have many strategies in mastering speaking skill. In this researcher wants to know strategies employed by students of Islamic Boarding School of Mamba’us Sholihin 2 Blitar learning speaking and the strategies employed are contributive to improve their speaking proficiency. The statement of the research problem are : (1) What kinds of strategies are employed by the students to improving their speaking proficiency at Islamic Boarding School of Mamba’us Sholihin 2 Blitar ? (2) How are employed the strategies student contributive to improve their speaking proficiency? The research method used in this study was descriptive method with qualitative approach. The data of this study were the selected information and description about the students strategies in improving their speaking proficiency and contribution of students strategies employed in improving their speaking proficiency. The data in this study were in the forms of statements and descriptions and they belonged to qualitative data. The procedures of collecting data were : (1) The researcher collected the data through observation and interview, (2) the researcher transcribed, selected the data focused on answer the research problems, (3) the researcher displayed those selected data in the form of narrative or description, and (4) drawing conclusion based on the analyzed data. The finding showed that the students’ speaking proficiency is achieved by employing various learning strategies to mastery many aspek in speaking such as: (1) looking up dictionary, (2) making small notes, (3) providing some of new vocabularies by phrase not word, (4) memorizing the words before going to sleep, (5) applying new vocabulary in speaking daily activity, (6) having handbooks grammar then writing tenses in small note, (7) sharing with other friends or mentor about grammar, (8) practicing to imitate pronounciation from watching movie and listening music, (9) understanding of the theme in boarding school lesson activity, (10) controlling of emotion to build selfconfidence, (11) keeping on to practice wherever they are. The contributions of students strategies employed to improve their speaking proficiency such as: (1) they were helpful in memorizing vocabulary easier, (2) they were helpful in learning grammar, (3) they were helpful in practicing pronounciation, and (4) they were helpful in increasing their selfconfident.
