Abstract
Key word: Code Switching in SMS Messages In general, people that use code switching in their conversation are membership in a speech community. SMS users tend to change their language depending on the needs and situation in their societies. As a result, people who send a message through SMS often switch language. Code switching happen both in oral and written language. Here, it may also occur in written language, for example, in a SMS massage. SMS users switch from Javanese to Indonesian or English or the other way round The problems of the study are: (1) what are the types of code switching in SMS messages sent by students of STAIN Tulungagung? (2) What are the possible reasons of code switching in SMS messages sent by students of STAIN Tulungagung? The purposes of the study are: (1) To find out the types of code switching in SMS message sent by students of STAIN Tulungagung. (2) To find out the possible reason for code switching in SMS message sent by student of STAIN Tulungagung. The design of the study is qualitative. It focuses on describing the nature of situation, as it exists at the time of research. This research describes the types of code switching in SMS messages sent by students of STAIN Tulungagung and the reason they do it. The source of data was the SMS messages contain several forms of code switching, they were, in the form of words, phrase, or sentence sent by the students of STAIN Tulungagung. The subjects of the research were students of STAIN Tulungagung. They were Javanese people who speak Javanese as their first language. The prosedur of collecting data was Researcher chosen the SMS messages received in researcher’s mobile phone which contained code switching expressions. Research finding: (1) the type of code switching in SMS messages send by students of STAIN Tulungagung are: 1) Intra sentential code switching, which involves a word within sentence, a question, a noun phrase, a question tag, a verb phrase, and an adjective phrase, 2) Inter-sentential code switching, 3) Intra lexical code switching, 4) Emblematic code switching, 5) Changing pronunciation feature. The most frequently is intra-sentential code switching, occur 55 times (30.6%), whereas changing pronunciation features is the lowest, occur 11 times (6.1%). (2) for the probable reason of code switching in SMS messages send by students of STAIN Tulungagung are: 1) Talking about a particular topic, 2) Quoting somebody else, 3) Being emphatic about something, 4) Inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors, 5) Repetition used for clarification, 6) Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, 7) Expressing group identity, 8) Softening or strengthening request or command, 9) A real lexical need that cannot be satisfactorily by the first language, 10) Humorous usage. The most frequently is expression group identity, occur 56 times (31.1%), whereas repetition use for clarification and being emphatic about something are the lowest, occur 2 times (1.1%).
