Abstract

English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S.S, M.Pd. As we know that the literary works not only a novel, short story, and essay, but also the poem. The poem is one of literary work that is full of imagination and every stanza containing meaning expression of the author’s emotional feelings. Poetry is very interesting to analyze through the language used. In addition, the researcher interested to know the sociological point of view in the selected poems written by Oscar Wilde. In this study, the researcher chose four selected poems by Oscar Wilde that is Symphony in Yellow, Madonna Mia, Sonnet to Italy, and San Miniato. The researcher chose the poetry because the poetry contained a figurative language. This study aims to answer the research questions: (1) What are the kinds of figurative language used in Oscar Wilde's poems? (2) What is the sociological point of view used in Oscar Wilde's selected poems? The purpose of this study are (1) To know the kinds of figurative language used in Oscar Wilde's selected poems. (2) To know the sociological point of view used in Oscar Wilde's poems. In this study the researcher used a library research with a qualitative approach to analyze Oscar Wilde's selected poem. and the poems as the instrument. The sources of data obtained used e-books, journals and the internet. Data analysis obtained by the reading and understanding of poem. The findings shows: (1) the figurative language used in Oscar Wilde's selected poems are: a. Symphony in yellow; imagery, simile, allegory, metaphor. b.Madonna Mia; symbolism, imagery, metaphor, hyperbole, simile. c.Sonnet to Liberty; hyperbole, simile, metonymy, allegory. d. San Miniato; hyperbole, metaphor, allegory. (2) the sociological point of view each poems. Symphony in Yellow the poem that aims to bring the reader into a world of beauty and sensuality, in every elements of poetry like (bus, river, shadow dock) is a perfect harmony, and the colour of yellow is generally considered the color of happiness, freshness, and sunshine. Madonna Mia this poem about the poet is describing the beauty and aesthetic of general woman. The title of poem depicts that the woman is not a ordinary woman but The Virgin Mary. Sonnet to Liberty is about the exploration of the nature freedom felt by the author through principles. San Miniato This poem is about Wilde’s repentance from his sainful life. Wilde lived a very debauched life, and he discovered that his life had no meaning and he writes ‘my heart is weeary of this life’. His journey to conversion to the Catholic Christian faith, he developed a devotion to Mary the Mother of God.
