Keywords: Effective Teacher Characteristics, Pre-service English Teacher, High Achiever Student Teacher effectiveness is a crucial factor affecting the student’s achievement and it is a critical factor of a teacher. Moreover, defining teacher effectiveness can be interpreted differently by different people. Teachers nowadays have to understand how teacher education should have “peace” relations and how is situated within globalization era. This responsibility must be understood by the teacher in every subject. Especially, English teacher which has more progressive than other subjects. From this urgency, it is needed for pre-service English teacher to understand what characteristics that should they owned before they go to the field. English Education department in IAIN Tulungagung is already accredited by A and has some great achievements. The formulations of research problems were: 1) What are the characteristics of effective English teacher (EET) as perceived by English Education Department’s students at IAIN Tulungagung? 2) How do student’s perceptions about an effective teacher influence their own expectation as teachers in the future? Moreover, the objectives of this study that supposed to be achieved in this research are: 1) To find out the characteristics of effective English teacher as perceived by English Education Department’s students at IAIN Tulungagung. 2) To investigate the student’s perceptions about an effective teacher influence their own expectation as teacher in the future. The research design was descriptive with qualitative approach. The subjects of the research were the three selected students from IAIN Tulungagung who are among the 3 highest GPA achievers in the batch of 2016. The researcher used in- depth interviews as a technique to gain the data. The data analysis of this research was classifying or tabulating data, data reduction, data display and the last one was making conclusion used triangulation to get the saturated data. The results of this research are the ideas regarding the characteristics of effective English teacher. In this research the researcher found 16 characteristics of effective teacher; teachers should open students’ mindset about English, should be firm to the students, should maintain dignity, should be a good role model, should be innovative, should have their own standard, should let their students to imagine freely, teacher should direct their students to explore their potential deeper, should help students to get to know themselves better, should evaluate them themselves, should teach their students to be proud of them themselves, should direct students to know what they want to be, should carry out obligations properly, should understand her students’ conditions, should master in materials, teachers became a good role model for the students and should make the students become a better people. The conclusion of this research by looking forward from the finding of the research was effective teachers through in-depth interview on 3 selected students from English education department of IAIN Tulungagung is not teachers who only focus on materials, but also pay attention to another aspect: pedagogical knowledge, socio-affective skill and personality competence. Moreover, even though every teacher has different ideas in defining effective teacher, but they have the same goals; how to optimize them themselves as a teacher and how to optimize students’ potentials.
