English becomes an important subject in every levels of education in Indonesia. As the foreign language, mastery English is not easy. Many learners in Indonesia still have problems in learning English. The teacher needs to conduct a proper strategy in order to make the learners can improve their ability in English. There are many strategies as the option to improve learner abbility in English, but communication could be a solution. Communication plays a very important role in life, and communication is unchangable part of human being life. In teaching-learning process, everyone will agree that communication has key position in classroom. Here, the researcher would like to acquaint about communication strategy. Communication strategy is one of the strategies used to solve learner’ problems in learning foreign language. Communication strategy could be a solution for the teacher to reach the goal of teaching learning process. For basic English learners, communication strategy will be very helpful. There are some kinds of communication strategies, and the teacher could find the proper communication strategy agree with the learners need. The key sucess of communication strategy is, how the teacher design the communication strategies in classroom interaction between teacher and the learners. Through this strategy the teacher could avoid misunderstanding and improve the learners ability in English. The researcher chooses an English course as the place of observation, because nowadays English course becomes an unique phenomenon. Nowadays, many learners in Indonesia move to English course as the alternative to improve their ability in English. In fact, many learners agree that English course is the best solution in learning English. This research was conducted in order to investigate the communication strategies that were used by The English tutor at EFB Tulungagung and to describe how the English tutor apply the communication strategies in classroom interaction.The formulation of research problem were: 1) What kind of communication strategies used by the English tutor in teaching English for basic level at EFB Tulungagung? 2) Which strategy is the most dominant in improving the learners ability used by the English tutor? The purpose of this research were to: 1) find out the kinds of communication strategy used by the English tutor in teaching English for basic level at EFB Tulungagung. 2) find out the most dominant communication strategy in improving the learners ability used by the English tutor. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was the English tutor of EFB Tulungagung. The data of this research was the utterances of the English tutor. Meanwhile, the utterances spoken by the learners are considered as complements of data. In collecting data, the researcher employed several instruments, they were: observation, interview, and documenting. In analyzing data, the researcher used some steps were as follows: recording, making transcription, identifying, and categorizing. Based on the result of the research, the researcher found several kinds of communication strategies that were used by the English tutor at EFB Tulungagung. They are repetition, mime, circumlocution, translation, appeal for assistance, and language switch. The tutor applied the communication strategies to overcome some problems found during interaction in the classroom. Meanwhile, the researcher found that the most dominant strategy that was used by the English tutor was language switch, but this research advices to reduce the usage of language switch in teaching English for basic level, and the researcher shows that repetition is the best solution to improve the learners ability in learning English for basic level.
