Abstract

ABSTRACT Toyibah, Tarowiyatul (2813133113). 2017.An Analysis of the Main Characters in Movie “The Great Gatsby”. Thesis of English Education Department at Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers’ Training State Islamic Institute Studies (IAIN) of Tulungagung.Advisor:Dr. Sutanto, M. Pd Keywords: Characteristic analysis. Main character, implicit message One of the things that will make it easier for someone to understand the story in a movie is to find the main characters in a movie. If the audience can easy to know and understand the characteristics of the main character in the movie, they will understand the story of the film. The formulations of problems are: 1) Howare the main characters’personality in movie “The Great Gatsby?” 2) Whatmessages are presented regarding to the roles of the main characters in the movie The Great Gatsby”? Research method: 1) the researcher downloading the movie script,2) watching the movie "the Great Gatsby", 3) reading and observing the dialogue from movie and the script, 4) Collecting the data to classify it into categories of characteristic physicologi according Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung , 5)collecting and selecting the every utterance in the movie into type of characteristic. Research results show that in the movie "The Great Gatsby" there are four main characters namely Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan Tom Buchanan and Nick Caraway. Jay Gatsby is a friend and also a neighbor of Nick Caraway, he is also a lover or boyfriend of Daisy Buchanan before Daisy married, he has an ambitious, faithful, and friendly. The next main character is Daisy Buchanan she is the wife of Tom Buchanan and she is also a cousin of Nick Caraway, she has personality is honest and careless. The third character is Tom Buchanan he is the husband of Daisy Buchanan and a friend of Nick Caraway, he has characteristic that is careless, emotional and liar. And the last is Nick Caraway he's a friend of Tom and also Gatsby, he has the nature of being helpful to friends and loyal friends. After knowing how the characteristics of all the main characters in the film, we can understand the story of the film and we can also understand the messages contained in the film. Messages that can be taken include Goodness does not always end with happiness and desire needs to be controlled.
