English Education Department. Faculty Of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Sukarsono, M. Pd. Keywords: Pragmatics, request, request strategies Language is a system of human’s freedom to express what they are thinking or feeling without any restriction. To achieve this goal, they need some capabilities in communication in which the message of the speaker may be accepted well by the listener if the speaker’s words are understandable and settled. In linguistics, study that concerned about the interpretation of the listener to the speaker’s meaning known as pragmatics. Speech acts as a branch of pragmatics focused on learning utterances which performed some action. In this study, the researcher focused on directive speech act called request.Request as the way of people make others do something. Differ from command, in request the speaker give a chance to the listener to comply or refuse his wish. The objective of this study is to give an authentic material that will be suitable to increasing the quality of students’ performance in speaking class especially in delivering request. The formulations of the research problem were: 1) What request strategies are used by the characters in Cinderella (2015) movie transcript? 2) How are the realizations of the request used in the characters conversations in Cinderella (2015) movie transcript? The purposes of this study were to: 1) know what request strategies that are used by the characters in Cinderella (2015) movie transcript. 2) know the realizations of request used in the characters conversations in Cinderella (2015) movie transcript. Research method: 1) the research design in this study was content analysis with descriptive qualitative approach, 2) the data source of this study was Cinderella (2015) movie transcript 3) the data of this study were all of the utterances in Cinderella (2015) movie transcript containing request strategies. The result showed that: 1) the request strategies used in Cinderella (2015) movie were 50.5% in mood derivable, 3.3% for explicit performatives, 3.3% for hedged performatives, 14.5% for obligation statement, 4.6% for want statement, 6.5% for suggestory formulae, 10.3% for query preparatory, 3.3% for strong hints and 3.7% for mild hints. 2) Formal pattern in mood derivable strategy found 99 utterances applied positive verbal pattern and 9 utterances applied negative verbal pattern; in explicit performatives found 6 utterances applied positive verbal pattern and 1 utterance applied passive verbal pattern; in hedged performatives found 2 utterances applied positive verbal pattern and 5 utterances applied interrogative pattern; in obligation statement found 21 utterances applied positive verbal pattern, 8 utterances applied negative verbal pattern and 2 applied question tag pattern; in want statement found 8 utterances applied positive verbal pattern and 2 utterances applied negative verbal pattern; in suggestory formulae found 11 utterances applied positive verbal pattern, 2 utterances applied interrogative pattern, and 1 utterance applied imperative pattern; in query preparatory found 19 utterances applied interrogative pattern, 2 utterances applied question tag pattern and 1 utterance applied positive verbal pattern; in strong hints found 5 utterances applied positive verbal pattern and 2 utterances applied interrogative pattern; in mild hints found 6 utterances applied nominal verbal pattern, 1 utterance applied interrogative pattern and 1 utterance applied imperative pattern. Based on the result of the study, the researcher wants to give some suggestion for the students, the teacher and the next researcher. The students can apply some expressions of delivering request from this study to make their communication more valuable and effectively. The teacher can employ this study as an authentic material in the class, especially in speaking class. The next researcher are suggested to develop their study in different subject and more specific strategy of delivering request like conventional indirect strategies to be analyzed.
