Abstract
ABSTRACT Citra Malaysiana. Student Registered Number. 12203173004 2021. Expressive Act Used By Gerda Wegener As The Main Character In The Movie The Danish Girl. Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, S.Pd.I, M.Pd Keyword: Expressive Act, Illocutionay Act, Pragmatic, Context In communication people needs to understand contextual information, the intentions of the speaker and how the message conveyed is understood by the listener. Expressive act is kind of speech act that express a psychological attitude or state of the speaker such as apologizing, appreciation, attitude, congratulating, greeting, thanking, and wishing. It is important because these act can not be separated from human beings in daily conversation. Learning expressive act can help the readers understanding what the speaker meaning, some of the conversations can be found and analyzed in the movie script because the conversation belong to spoken languange. The formulation of research problem are 1) what are the type of expressive acts used by the main character in The Danish Girl movie? 2) what is the language context of expressive act used by the main character in The Danish Girl movie? The researcher uses descriptive qualitative content analysis method. The object of this research was The Danish Girl Movie. The data of this research is obtained from the utterances performed by Gerda Wegener as the main character in The Danish Girl Movie. Technique of collecting data are: 1) Selecting the data, 2) analyzing the data, 3) Classifying the data by the code, and 4) interpreting the data. The data classified in Searle’s theory, are expressive for an apology, expressive for appreciation, expressive for attitude, expressive for congratulation, expressive for greeting, expressive for thanking, and expressive for wishing. The findings of the research show that from seven types of expressive speech acts, the researcher founds six of expressive speech acts performed by the main character in the movie. The types of expressive speech act found are expressive for apology 5 data, expressive for congratulating 5 data, expressive for attitude 14 data, expressive for greeting 7 data, expressive for thanking 4 data, and expressive for wishing 1 data. In conclusion, the expressive attitude was mostly dominant used by the main character in the movie. Then the researcher analyzed and found the main character used the context. The most situation in the movie is happening around at the house. The conversation happened almost between Gerda with her husband. The researcher found that context influences illocutionary acts in interpreting meaning.
