Abstract

Aqilla, Qotrunnada Trisna S. Registered Number Student 12203173028. 2021. A Study of the Main Character’s Conflict and Its Educational Values in Little Women Movie. Thesis English Education Department. Bachelor Program. The State Islamic University of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keywords: The Main Character, Conflict, Educational Values. Literature is an artistic work that can be used by society and adequate to unify various field in human life through non-boring way, including education. Literature also reflects the values and messages that can be used as a lesson for society. In human life, the most familiar literary work that can be visualized and listened is movie. In this study, Little Women movie (directed by Greta Gerwig) is selected because this is an inspiring movie which not only provide fictional entertainment but also deliver the story that relevant with society; especially about gender equality. The main character in this movie is Josephine March. Here, in order to fight for women’s right, the main character must experience various conflicts and she must find any complicated ways to solve her problem. By means of conflict faced, there are also found some values that can be learned from it. Based on the case above, the statements of research problem are (1) What are the reasons of conflicts experienced by the main character? (2) What are kinds of conflicts faced by the main character? (3) How are the conflicts solved by the main character? (4) What are educational values found portrayed from the conflicts faced by the main character? The research design used in this study is qualitative in category of library research. The sources of data were taken from the main character’s utterances or dialogue in Little Women Movie. Based on the analysis, the result of this study as follows: (1) The reasons of conflicts experienced by the main character is because of the existence of discrimination and racism toward women around American Civil War era. (2) There were found three kinds of conflicts as stated by Perrine’s theory (1966), they are; psychological conflict, social conflict, and physical conflict. (3) How to solve the problems were found three ways based on PISA (2012), they are; exploring and understanding, planning and executing, also monitoring and reflecting. (4) Through the conflicts faced there were nine kind of educational values appeared as stated by Taylor’s theory (2006), they are; never give up, self-confidence, friendly and be polite, love, forgiveness, optimism, help each other, responsible, and hard work. Based on the result, the researcher would like to deliver any suggestions for the spectators of movie, the readers, and further researchers. Through the conflicts faced, the spectators wished could afterthought and help to stop any racism, patriarchy, and discrimination toward women in real life. The readers suggested to improve their insight and knowledge especially related to category of conflicts and educational values. The further researcher who will conduct the similar research hoped to expand the study and analyze deeply in a better research to minimize weaknesses and limitations.
