Abstract

English Education Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keywords: Speaking, Difficulties in Speaking, Factors of Difficulties in Speaking, Strategies to Overcome Difficulties in Speaking, Online Class The COVID-19 pandemic is currently rife all over the world, including in Indonesia. Consequently, the appearances of problems in various sectors, especially in education. This pandemic causes learning activities to take place in online and occurs to various challenges. One of the problems is when students try to convey their ideas or ideas in the form of conversation, namely speaking. The students cannot express freely due to this pandemic. This study aims to find out what are the difficulties of students in online speaking English classes. The research problems of this study are: 1) What are the difficulties in online speaking class experienced by students’ Tenth Grade Islamic Senior High School 3 Tulungagung? 2) What factors experienced by students’ Tenth Grade of Islamic Senior High School 3 Tulungagung that cause the difficulties in online speaking class? and 3) How do the Tenth Grades of students Islamic Senior High School 3 Tulungagung to overcome their difficulties in online speaking class? The researcher used descriptive study by using qualitative approach and the method of collecting the data was semi structured interview. In this research, the subject is choosed by certain criteria. The criteria regarding to tenth grades students with high score, middle score and lower score within active in the class. The data is selected by the students’ response on questionnaire and the online interview. With the answers given in the questionnaire, the researcher needs more detailed information and digs deeper into the interview by choosing the students with those criteria. From the results of the interview, data was obtained which will be included in the interview transcript to make it easier to analyze the data. In analysing the data, the research uses three ways that are data reduction, data display and drawing the conclusion. The result of this research was as follows: a) The students’ difficulties in online speaking class such as lack of self-confidence, nothing to say, structure (grammar and syntax), lack of time, environment and vocabulary, b) The factors that cause the difficulties in online speaking found as internal and external factors. The internal factors are divides into self- distruct, low vocabulary, grammar and lack of motivation, while the external factors include lack of practice and time constraints and also c) The strategies of students to overcome the difficulties in online speaking class divided into direct and indirect strategy. The direct strategy includes memory, cognitive and compensation strategies. Meanwhile, the indirect strategy includes metacognitive, affective and social strategies. In the end, the students can choose for themselves which method or strategy is the best for him to develop in overcoming all difficulties in speaking in online classes when they start to identify the problems or difficulties in speaking in online classes so that, they will be able to find out the causes or factors that make the difficulties occur.
