Abstract

Characterization in movie is the process of the actor’s interpreting a character in a movie. It is not always equated with the psychology or social conditions of the character, but characterization can also be given through the different backgrounds of the character. The different characterizations that the producer gives to the cast, it adds value to the viewer’s appeal. Through the characterization, the viewer will be able to easily find out the character of each player, thus making the movie easier to understand. Because of the importance of characterization in the movie, the researcher wants to analyze the characterization of the main character in the Soul movie. The researcher chooses Soul movie because this movie received many awards at the time of its release and also in it there were many characterizations that showed by the main character which can be as a life lesson in living the life. The research problems in this research are: 1) How Joe’s characterization is describes in Soul movie? 2) How 22’s characterization is describes in Soul movie?, and 3) What are the messages that can be learn from Soul movie?. The purposes of this research are: 1) To describe the characterizations of Joe in Soul movie. 2) To describe the characterizations of 22 in Soul movie, and 3) To describe the messages that can be learn from Soul movie. This research uses qualitative design with descriptive method. This research used the primary data that was Soul movie and the secondary data that was Soul English subtitle. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentary technique. In analyzing the data in this research used Mlies & Huberman (2014) they were data reduction, data display, drawing conclusion and verification. The researcher used credibility to check the data was credible and dependability in this research was used to make consistency in collecting data process. The results in this research showed that characterization of Joe was a casual musical teacher, enthusiast, careless, meaningless, loved jazz, worried excessively, ambitious, regretful person, hard-working, cheated, passionate, and expressive person. Meanwhile the characterization of 22 showed 22 was a soul which was naked, naughty, honest, pessimistic, annoying, love music, afraid, angry, nervous, hopeless, enthusiast, and hated earth. In addition, there were some messages that can be learn from Soul movie, they are enjoy the little things in life, our passions are not always our purposes, our plans are not necessarily the best, and never give up.
