Keywords: social presence, perceived learning, online learning The development of online education has been progressing rapidly. It has touched all levels of education starting from the lowest level to the highest level. Further research is needed on the experiences of students in online learning. One way that has been explored in relation to the quality of the online learning experience is to look at students' responses and reactions from their social presence and perceived learning. The theory of social presence is perhaps the most popular construct used to describe and understand how people socially interact in online learning environments. While, the theory of perceived learning is used to describe students’ perception of the information they have extracted from a given course which is correlated to measure cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning. Therefore, this research aim at investigating the social presence and perceived learning toward English course in online learning environment. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How is the social presence toward English course in online learning environment?, 2) How is perceived learning toward English course in online learning environment?. The objectives of the research were: 1) To investigate the social presence toward English course in online learning environment?, 2) To investigare perceived learning toward English course in online learning environment. Research method applied in this research included: 1) the research design of this study was survey research design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this research was all of the sixth semester students of IAIN Tulungagung which consist of for about 300 students, 3) the sample was selected by using random sampling and took 70 students which represents an entire group as a whole, 4) the research instrument was adapted the questionnaires which are consist of Social Presence Model (Whiteside’s, 2007; 2011; 2015) and CAP Perceived Learning Scale (Rovai et al., 2009), 5) the data analysis was computed by SPSS 16.0. The findings showed that: (1) social presence toward English course in online learning environment were generally in high level of agreement. It showed that students identifying that they are able to interact sufficiently with their peers in the online learning. While, for (2) perceived learning toward English course in online learning environment are generally in positive agreement. In this case, they have high ability on cognitive and affective learning and low ability on psychomotor learning. It can be concluded that social presence and perceived learning toward English course in online learning environment were in positive agreement. In this case, talking about the social presence and perceived learning is influenced by the motivation and teaching techniques of lecturers, besides that facilities and infrastructure also become a significant component in determining the effectiveness of online learning.
