Keywords: Literacy, Literacy practices, Reading Literacy, Reading Practices, Writing Literacy, Writing Practices Literacy is a prerequisite for individual success in education and social life. Through good literacy skills, students can gain access to world of knowledge and information, enhance their ability in technology and improve the quality of individuals to participate in society. Initially, the concept of ‘literacy’ is interpreted as the ability to read and write. Then, along with the development of Information, Communication and Technology, the concept of literacy has gradually changed. In this matter, literacy is understood as social practice which involves reading and writing as part of the process of producing ideas and constructing meaning. As foundational skills in literacy, reading and writing must be mastered and become a habitual activity for undergraduate students. Unfortunately, the significance role of these skills is not well realized by university students. Some of them are still unconcerned toward the importance of having good literacy quality. Based on the above statement, the present study tried to find out the literacy practices of reading and writing of undergraduate students of sixth semester of English department. It is expected to find out (1) the types of reading literacy practices; (2) the types of writing literacy practices and (3) how do the students learn better from the employed practices of reading and writing literacy. The method used in this research was mixed method with using explanatory approach. The population were undergraduate students of sixth semester of English Eduaction Department in UIN SATU Tulungagung with the sample taken is 125 undergraduate students. There were two instruments used in this research namely questionnaire and in-dept interview. After the quantitative data were obtained from distributing questionnaires via Google form, the researcher then conducted in-depth interview with four selected research subjects based on the criteria in which the research subjects have the best reading and writing literacy practices. The finding revealed that undergraduate students of sixth semester have various type of reading practices which classified into several category: (a) the ways of reading; (b) reading processes; (c) reading preferences; (d) the types of sources of reading materials; (e) amount of time spent on reading; (e) the frequency of reading materials; and (f) the purposes of reading materials. As for writing, the category of practices include: (a) the production processes; (b) The types of genres in writing; (c) The types of written products; and (d) The construction of texts. Meanwhile, the result of in-depth interview found that four students employed various practices in reading and writing literacy. These practices of reading and writing employed by the students because they believe it greatly contributed to their learning. Some of the practices also employed by them because of enjoyment and eager to do it frequently. Silent reading is common type of practices in reading since contributed to their understanding of a material considering that reading silently provides a calm atmosphere. Students preferred to read fiction materials such as novel, short stories and comics because of entertaining and enjoyment. Most of them used electronic sources in order to find support their references for learning. They also have various amount of time reading between one hour and 2-3 hours. In term of frequency of reading, eager to provide more time on reading whether it for learning or hobbies. The production processes were done frequently in order to fulfill college assignments. In term of construction of text, the ways of writing were used according to their habits, abilities and needs to complete their writing.
