Abstract
Azizah, Rona Syofi. 126203201005. 2024. The Effectiveness of Extensive Reading Towards Students’ Reading Skills in The First Grade of MTsN 7 Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Prof. Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M. Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Extensive Reading, Reading Skills, Making Inference One of English linguistic skills that should be mastered by learners is reading. At present, in implementing reading learning in English subjects, reading texts are already available in the module book. However, it would be better if students are given the opportunity to choose the texts they want to read without any coeurcion, as in the principle in Extensive Reading. Once Extensive Reading is not implemented in the learning process at school, students' abilities will not develop. Many studies on Extensive Reading (ER) indicate its effectiveness on students’ abilities of English. However, research on extensive reading at the Islamic junior high school level in the field of reading skills, especially in making inference, is still not much researched. By the identification of gap from the previous studies, this research focuses on the effectiveness of extensive reading on the reading skill namely making inference of the first graders of junior high school. The formulation of research problem in this research was “is there any significant difference score of student’s reading skills at MTsN 7 TULUNGAGUNG before and after taught using Extensive Reading?”. According to this study’s research problem, the intended of the study is to investigate whether there is significant difference in the students’ score in reading skills on the first graders of MTsN 7 TULUNGAGUNG before and after taught using Extensive Reading or not. The writer used pre-experimental research one-group pretest-posttest design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was all first graders at MTsN 7 Tulungagung which consist of 8 classes. Purposive sampling was used in this research to select 37 students from VII-D as the sample. The instrument of this study was a reading test in the form of 20 multiple choice questions. The collected data was analyzed using IBM SPSS 26 with the formula of Paired Sample T-Test. The result of data analyzed using statistical formula indicates improvement between the mean score of students’ pre-test and post-test after taught by using Extensive Reading. Mean score of pre-test is 71.89 become 85.00 in post-test. The T-Test output reveals that the significance value of the data is 0.000 which is smaller than the standard of significance level, 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that there is significant difference score of students reading skills especially in making inference before and after being taught using Extensive Reading. Therefore, Extensive Reading can be used as an approach to teach students reading learning process exclusively in making inference by English teacher.
