Keywords: Argumentative writing, Opinion Section, Jakarta Post Argumentative writing is paragraph that explains and convince the reader about agreement and disagree. The reader will not agree and believe with the writer if there are no strong reason. Opinion is an idea someone about particular subject. In the newspaper there are some part, one of them is opinion section, opinion section contain opinion or argument of journalist. From the result pretest of the students in Islamic High School 3 (MAN 3) Tulungagung, the researcher has know the problems of the students in writing argumentative text. From the questionnaire the researcher also know that the students could not write the argumentative text well, it happens because the students do not pay attention with the teacher explanation because no media used by the teacher. The researcher considers to using opinion section in Jakarta Post to improve students’ skill in write the argumentative text. First of all, the Jakarta Post is the newspaper written using English and opinion section is part of newspaper that assist the students to find out the opinion of journalist and make own students’ argument whether they agree or disagree with the writer. The formulation of research problem in this study is how can opinion section of Jakarta Post improve argumentative writing achievement in Islamic High School 3 Tulungagung ?. Based on the research problem, this study aimed to find out the improvement argumentative writing achievement using opinion section in Jakarta Post in Islamic High School 3 Tulungagung. The design of the research was classroom action research (CAR). The population of this study was all of the students of XI IIS 1 in Islamic High School 3 Tulungagung consist of 36 students. The research instrument was test. In this study the researcher used two cycles, every cycle consists of three meetings. First meeting to explain material about how to write the argumentative text and how to find out the opinion, second meeting implementation the media, and the last meeting give a task. In every cycle have four procedures they are: planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. From the data of this study, the data show that students’ writing can improve. It can be seen from the result of the test in preliminary observation, all of the students got score below 75, whereas the mastery leaning criteria is 75. The average score in preliminay is 48.61. In cycle I the average is the percentage of success is 41.7%. In cycle II the researcher use the strategy of group discussion, in this study the average is 77.36 and the percentage of success is 86%. In other words, opinion section in Jakarta Post can be used as an alternative media to improve students’ writing achievement through group discussion at XI IIS 1 grade in Islamic High School 3 Tulungagung.
