Abstract

Literature is the expression of life in the word of truth and beauty. Literature has been regarded as human creation to express ideas or thoughts. Literature is an element that has a high artwork and imaginative. In this study, the writer chooses movie as a subject of study. Because, literary work especially movie provides a lot of inspirations of life. Movie gives the reader an awareness that story happens in a movie is a reflection from a real life. From the movie, the reader know about the characterization from the actors. Characters are people in narratives and characterization is explains about things done by a character. Moreover, there are several reasons why the writer studied characterization of the main character in “Gone Girl” movie script. First, the writer is interested in studying literature about movie from Gillian Flynn, because this movie has remarkable characters. Second, this movie can give inspiration to all people. We all must be good person, don’t be a psychopath person. If we become psychopath, everyone can hate us and we can feel alone in the world. Some experts have different opinions about literature, it depends on the time, situation and social condition. The last, the study of literature is rare in demand, especially by students English Department of State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung as there is only teacher training department. So many differences of literature definition do not changed the meaning of literature itself. Literature is said as medium of expressing ideas. The statements of research problem are: First, How is the main characters’ physical appearance? Second, How is the main characters’ personality? Third, How is the main characters’ social status? Four, How is the main characters’ social relationship? This study is intended to explain: First, main characters’ physical appearance. Second, the main characters’ personality. Third, the main characters’ social status. Four, the main characters’ social relationship. The method in this study is qualitative by using library research. Data and data source from books. The data are inform of statements, dialog, and actions which are collected by using documentation and analyzed descriptively. The data for the research is all sentences and dialogues among the character in the movie which are related to the characters’ characterization. The steps to collect data are: first, Reading and understanding the movie script. Second, identifying by all sentences and dialogues in the movie to get the data. Third, grouping the data dealing with the problem that will be investigated. And the last is analyzing data that have been successfully collected and make conclusions because of research. The findings of this research reveal that: Nick Dunne and Amy Elliot Dunne are the main character in the movie, because they are given much contribution of the story. The characterization is about the main characters’ physical appearance, personality, social status and social relationship. Nick’s physical appearance is, he is a male that sweet looking, he has moderately tall, fat man in age thirty years old. His personality shows that he is respect to the other people around him, but in the end he became useless. His social status is someone who has educated person. He has good relationship with other people in his sorroundings. Another main character is Amy Elliot Dunne. Her physical appearance is a beautiful nd gorgeous woman who her body is thin. Her personality is unhumble with her friends. Her social status is High educated person, she is from upper classes. And she has not good relationship with people in her sorroundings.
