Abstract
Ma’rufah, Fa’izzah. 126203211028. 2025. The Positive Representation of Women in Voice of Baceprot Songs Using Sara Mills Approach. Bachelor Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nursamsu, S.Pd.I, M.Pd Keywords: women representation, Voice of Baceprot, Sara Mills, discourse analysis, feminism, patriarchy, music Throughout the years, in the text women are frequently portrayed as powerless, submissive characters who must obey men. This representation of women is strongly connected to the patriarchal culture that has been existing for a long time. Voice of Baceprot conveys social criticism through their choice of language and strong words in line with their heavy metal genre. The purpose of this research was to examine how Voice of Baceprot represent women in their song lyrics, and to identify discourse of women’s representation constructed in Voice of Baceprot’s song lyrics based on Sara Mills approach. The study adapt qualitative research, a descriptive research focuses on real issues that are actually happening and are widely discussed by the public. The research methodology involves content analysis. The primary data are three song lyrics entitled [NOT] PUBLIC PROPERTY, PMS and Renegade Sheep using Sara Mills Critical Discourse Analysis method and additional theory of representation to see how the band represents women in their lyrics. The secondary data is taken from various credible sources relevant to this study. Triangulation technique is used to test the credibilty in this study. Thereafter, the researcher conducted an audit through consulting with the thesis supervisor to minimize errors in the presentation of research findings and the research process, followed by a comprehensive audit of the entire research process by the thesis supervisor. Based on the analysis of this study, Voice of Baceprot's songs represent women as strong agents defending their freedom and rights, even though women are often being victim of the patriarchal system, women are positioned as an active subject that has power to fight the injustice that they faced. Based on Sara Mills’ theory, the position of the subject and object in the text shows a power relationship, and Voice of Baceprot places women in the position of subjects who control the discourse. In conclusion, Voice of Baceprot is able creating a new discourse about Indonesian women as free, empowered, spiritual, and equal. Through music, they prove it can be a political tool that challenges patriarchal structures and expands the space for women’s voices in popular media. Voice of Baceprot’ demonstrates how the band's music respects the harmony of life and supports feminist ideals. Because this research only focuses on the lyrics, future researchers could shift the focus of analysis to the video clip, or try different research method such as surveying people's views on Voice of Baceprot's songs in conveying gender issues.
