Abstract

ABSTRACT Hidayat, Harun. Register Number Student: 1723143066. 2018. Expressive Speech Acts in “The Fate of The Furious” Movie. Thesis English Educational Progam. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor : Dr. Sukarsono Keyword : Expressive Speech Act, syntactical realization, feeling, Movie Script. In daily communication, people perform action by utterance. The actions performed by utterance is called speech act. There are five kinds of speech act. One of the classifications is expressive speech act. It is the kind of speech act that state about speaker feeling. This study aims at finding out the expressive speech acts in “The Fate of The Furious” Movie Script. The questions of this research are : 1) What kind of expressive speech act found in The Fate of The Furious movie? 2) How many percentages occur from each kind of expressives speech acts? In this research, the researcher used content analysis as the design of the research. The method to collect the data used documentation to get the data from the The Fate of The Furious movie Script. The researcher used theory from George Yule and John Searle to classify the expressive speech acts that were found by researcher. George Yule said “Expressives are the speech acts in which the speaker expresses an attitude to or about a state of affairs using such verbs as apologize, appreciate, congratulate, deplore, detest, regret, thank, welcome, etc. In other words, they express the psychological state of the speaker’s mind in making statements of pleasure, pain, joy, sorrow, etc”. On the other hand, John Searle has an other opinion about expressive act. He said that “The paradigms of expressive verbs are thank, congratulate, apologize, condole, deplore, and welcome”. From analyzing the “The Fate of The Furious” movie script, the researcher found the expressive speech act and the syntactical realization of speech act. The first result of the research is that are nine kinds of expressive speech acts. They are apologizing, thanking, praising, blaming, welcoming, pleasure, like, dislike, and sorrow. From the nine kinds of expressive speech acts that were found by researcher, praising expressions were the most often appear in the movie script. The syntactical realization of the expressive speech acts that were found by researcher were declarative, interrogative and impressive. Most of the expressions are declarative. From the finding, the researcher found that the expressions that are stated in the The Fate of The Furious movie express feeling indirectly. Finally the writer suggest the reader, student, and the future researcher who are interested in pragmatic, especially in the expressive speech act theories, to study more related references and to conduct a study about speech act especially expressive speech act form various point of view. So, the study about speech act especially expressive speech act will be developed.
