Abstract

Keywords: correlation, simple present tense, descriptive text The descriptive text is used to describe someone, something or place specifically. The descriptive text that is studied by the students of junior high school consists of not only a description but also an identification of the writing subject. Because the descriptive text here is to describe something that still exists, so that this text frequently uses simple present tense in its sentences. Simple present tense is one of language features in writing descriptive text. It is because simple present tense is not only used to talk about habit and general truth, but also can be used to describe people or things in general, not now. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How is the students’ simple present tense mastery? 2) How is the students’ ability in writing descriptive text? 3) Is there any correlation between simple present tense mastery and ability in writing descriptive text? The purpose of this research were to: 1) know the students’ simple present tense mastery, 2) know the students’ ability in writing descriptive text, 3) know if there is correlation between simple present tense mastery and ability in writing descriptive text. Research method: 1) the research design in this research was correlational descriptive design, 2) the population of this research was the first graders of SMPN 1 Kauman in academic year 2010/2011, 3) the sample was class VII-G consisting of 37 students, 4) the research instrument was test and documentation, 5) the data analysis was using mean score and Pearson product moment correlation. The result showed that the mean score of grammar test is 76.5541. This mean score is in the level 70 up to 79. So, it can be said that the students’ simple present tense mastery is good. The mean score of writing test is 63.0632. This mean score is in the level 60 up to 69. So, it can be said that the students’ ability in writing descriptive text is fair. The sig. (2-tailed) that is 0.014 is lower than level of significant (α) 5%, then Ha which states that there is a correlation between simple present tense mastery and ability in writing descriptive text is accepted, and Ho which states that there is no correlation between simple present tense mastery and ability in writing descriptive text is rejected. It means that there is a correlation between simple present tense mastery and ability in writing descriptive text.
