English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Twitter, Microblogging Activity, Writing Ability Writing is one of the language skills that should be mastered by student. It is important because communication do not only happen through spoken language but also in written language. Practicing writing especially in foreign language is not always easy for student. There are some ways to improve students’ writing ability in English. One of the ways to improve students’ writing ability is practicing through social media because nowadays it is commonly used. Writing in social media is categorized as microblogging activity that can help student practice their writing. Twitter is one of the microblogging social media that allow its user to communicate through short message. Twitter is assumed to have contribution for students’ writing ability since this application is writing based social media which highlighted at writing feature. Thus, the researcher tries to find out from the students’ perspective related to Twitter contribution for writing ability based on their experience in Twitter. The formulation of the research problem in this research is “How is Twitter contributions towards students’ writing ability” while the purpose of the study is to describe about the Twitter contribution towards students’ writing ability. It is included the reason why student choose Twitter to practice writing, what kind of contribution Twitter give to students relate to their writing ability, and the possible challenge that involves the activity. This Research applies descriptive quantitative design with survey method. The population of this research is all Twitter users while the sample is Twitter users who has status as student and claim themselves that Twitter has contribution towards their writing ability. The instrument used in this research is questionnaire made by the researcher to answer the research problem. The finding shows that Twitter has suitable features for writing practice, Twitter makes interaction among people around the world possible, Twitter facilitates Students to learn from each other, Twitter also helps students to write sentences and paragraph, but the use of Twitter brings challenge because of its contents and social media issues. However, Twitter is a good way to help students to improve their writing ability because the interaction of social media can increase their enthusiasm in written communication.
